Sunset - University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada

This was a good day to photograph a sunset because there were a few clouds in the sky, but not too many.

Beauty Amid the Squalor

Images of flowers engraved into the plaster of a wall in an apartment building in Beijing—much nicer than graffiti.

I was on my way to take the elevator when I saw this on the wall nearby. I don’t recall ever seeing anything like this in the West.

Westerner Meets East

A German tourist on the Great Wall of China at Badaling, photographing the countryside beyond, in the autumn of 2006. Some Chinese graffiti is visible, carved into the stones of the Wall.

The Badaling section of the Great Wall, the closest section to Beijing, was the first section of the Great Wall opened to tourists, and it remains the most popular.

An Ironic Welcome

This sign greets travellers arriving at Beijing Capital International Airport, many of whom came to visit the home of one of the world's most ancient cultures. The irony was so thick it stopped me in my tracks, and I just had to take this picture. It's a sign of change as well as a welcome sign, I suppose.
